Yes, indeedÉUltimate Frisbee is being played at high schools all over the St. Louis Metro area.

What do you want to do Ð start-up a team? Play other schools?  This is the place!

Here are some tips to successfully launch a team:

First things first Ð Schedule a clinic

You must know the rules to avoid injury and compete.

  1. Contact the St. Louis Ultimate Association (SLUA) for Ultimate Video and a UPA Certified coach.  Agree on clinic dates that fit each otherÕs schedule.
  2. Reserve a fieldÑSpecify an exact date, time, and location.
(Hint: PE teachers are the best resources.  Coaches and Athletic Directors are afraid they will lose their best athletes once they get a taste of chasing plastic. They are right, but you have to assure any coach or athlete that this will not conflict with any school sports and will be great cross-training.)
  3. Host a Sign-upÑreserve a 27Ó or larger TV and VCR from your schoolÕs AV department.  See PE Teacher to arrange this.  Play Ultimate videos before school, during lunch, after school, and any contact time.  Bring a few discs and cause a scene flipping them around. Have players fill out an index card with their year in school, email address, phone number, level of experience, athleticism and put them in a shoebox.  This is co-ed, non-contact sport so encourage the girls to sign up.
  4. Hand them a reminder flyer that gives
    1. date and time of the clinic,
    2. wear cleats,
    3. bring light and dark shirts,
    4. bring water jug.

The clinic day has arrived: YouÕll learn the meaning of the following terms:
Forehand, backhand, mark, break mark, stall, pull, stack, force, huck, dump, hammer, travel, pick, reset, swill, greatest, squibber, hand block, handlers, middles, and longs.

VC Ultimate provides a HIGH SCHOOL RESOURCE in pdf format.

Second Step: Sign up for The St. Louis High School Ultimate League!
All team organizers, go join the STLHSUltimate Yahoo Group and register your team's contact and home-field information (instructions for doing this are listed in the Yahoo Group).

Third Step: Create an Ongoing Program:
One of the best high school teams in St. Louis is SLUH.  Why?  Each class elects a captain.  When the Seniors graduate, the Junior captain becomes the senior captain and the sophomore captain becomes the Junior captain and so on.  Freshman at some schools can beat the juniors and seniors.  Encourage class unity and youÕll be very competitive in a few short years.
