Priory Wins 2019 State Championship

Weekend Recap

On May fourth and fifth, sixteen men’s teams faced off for the 2019 Missouri State Championship. Priory came into the tournament as the top seed followed by De Smet (2), Ladue (3), Chaminade (4). All four top ranked teams went 3-0 in pool play on Saturday. Bracket play is where things got exciting. With the top four teams getting a first round off, eight teams battled it out to determine who would face the pool play winners in quarters. Priory (1) left quarters with the ease beating De Smet JV (10) 13-4. The De Smet (2), CBC (9) game was a little closer with De Smet winning 13-7. Our third and fourth seated teams had to put up a fight in quarters: Ladue (3) beat Francis Howell Central (5) 13-11, and Chaminade (4) lost to St. John Vianney (6) 13-8 — the first real upset of the tournament. With four teams left in contention, semis started at 2pm (Priory v. Vianney, De Smet v. Ladue). Again, Priory displayed their dominance and beat Vianney 13-9. They would meet the winner of the thrilling De Smet v. Ladue game in the finals at 4pm. With the score tied 12-12 in a game to 13, De Smet and Ladue faced off on universe for either teams last point of the season. De Smet came out on top beating Ladue 13-12. The finals was set, Priory v. De Smet in the 2019 Men’s State Final. While Priory had steam rolled the weekend thus far playing De Smet in the final was nothing new to them. Over the past decade De Smet has owned the Missouri State Championship beating Priory and many other teams in the final game before. But this year, it was different. Priory came into the final with a vengeance and won the state title 13-10. Overall Priory went 6-0 at state allowing 29 goals and scoring 72. Congratulations!
